The Snowy Mountains scheme is iconic, and is widely known as one of the most complex engineering projects in the world. Snowy 2.0 commenced in 2019, and in this article, we explain how Viking Industrial delivered reliable on-site power for this exciting new project.
What is Snowy 2.0?

Snowy 2.0 is the next stage in the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme – a nation-building renewable energy project that aims to provide reliable energy and large-scale storage for generations to come at lowest cost. It’s the largest committed renewable energy project in Australia, set to deliver 2,000MW of on-demand energy and 350,000MWh of large scale storage for the National Electricity Market.
Customised power solution to kickstart the project

In 2020, we supplied the first temporary generators for Snowy 2.0 for early works across various sites. These sixteen generators provided 16MW of power, with eight sets being utilised to support infrastructure (such as worker camp accommodation) around the site. Fuel tanks, cables and other equipment were also provided. Smaller Viking generators are also onsite, ranging from 2kVA “push-around” to 600kVA sets, supporting camps and smaller tasks.

Second to none service and support

Our Cooma branch was set up to provide the best project support possible, with local staff and regular visits from our Brisbane and Perth teams. The Viking crew is always busy at the Snowy 2.0 site and in our Cooma branch, with our service team providing 24/7 support and maintenance to all equipment on site to help ensure the project continues to run smoothly. Our experienced people on the ground and behind the scenes are actively working with our client to grow with them and the ever-changing scope of the project.
Powering Snowy 2.0 and the local community

As is the aim of all our major projects, Viking Industrial has invested in the community, with employment opportunities for locals and support of local community-based organisations. This is a win-win, as it allows us to support our client with local talent on the ground when they’re needed most, while also giving the local community a boost.
