Viking Industrial supplied a hybrid power solution to a mobile asphalt plant in Rockhampton, Queensland. The package combined diesel generation with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to deliver continuous, efficient power across the site, including security, lighting and refrigeration, while significantly reducing the environmental and operational footprint of running diesel generators around the clock.
Running diesel generators continuously to supply low overnight loads creates a range of problems: excessive diesel consumption, light-loading which accelerates engine wear, increased noise pollution for surrounding areas, and more frequent servicing requirements. Fulton Hogan needed a smarter solution that could maintain 24/7 power to site essentials without the inefficiencies of running heavy diesel sets through the night.
Viking Industrial designed and delivered a hybrid rental package combining diesel generation with battery energy storage. A 350kVA and 150kVA diesel generator handle peak production loads during active operations, while a 100kWh / 45kVA Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) takes over during periods of low demand, supplying overnight power to security systems, lighting, refrigeration and other site essentials. Temporary distribution was handled via 125A and 250A distribution boards with full cable infrastructure. The setup allows the diesel generators to be shut down overnight, running only when load demands justify it.
